musings on heredity -the ramblings part one

one of the fun things about having rescue dogs is the eternal loop of theories on their breed backgrounds (see previous post on little gigi the wonderdog, and why we have determined she is malinois rather than a classic german shepherd mix) and our little nina, the naughty husky, is no exception. the only thing we know for sure is that when we agreed to "take her off the hands" of the homeowner where she was at, was that her mother was a huge lanky white and silver tipped husky (along with alluded-to-be wolf hybrid) with seven other littermates. the people told us if we didn't take her away, they would take her and her other black sibling and dump them off at a shelter in modesto county, which were full to the brim with unwanted pets due to the first wave of foreclosures during the summer of 2008. their chances to get out alive were slim, rumors concerning the amount of abandoned pets put down during that season were chilling and stomach-turning 16000 a day, at a low estimate. when my husband saw the little black bear-like four pound bundle rooting around and screeching looking for milk from its mother, his heart melted. he asked if he could pay for the owners to keep her their with the mother for the time it would take for the little mug to be weaned at least at 8 weeks. But the owner refused and repeated that she didn't want the poor little bugger to get "attached" to the other pups or the mom, and that if we didn't take the pup (she offered a two for one deal with the other black pup, which we couldn't do because of our living situation-a 600sq ft apt and no yard-at the time) immediately that day, she was going to drop them off that afternoon at a shelter. nina, or as she was known at that time, nino, (that story to follow-LOL) came over to my husband crying and baying like crazy, and he picked her up and she tried to nurse his ear as he held her like a baby on his shoulder. with her fur bristly and sweet smelling, he took his finger and gave it to her to suckle. he gave the woman the asked for 'adoption fee' which she claimed reimbursed her for the shots and deworming fees ( a bold lie since when we took the poor little mite to the vet to get her formula the vet informed us that shots couldn't take place before eight weeks) incurred, and packed the noisiest little girl into our cat carrier and headed for the house.
part two tomm.
