another calendar year gone by

as the frost on the ground thaws, we at fairmont ridge are wishing our millions of dedicated readers a very happy and prosperous new calendar year. yes, a new calendar year, for there are many ways of measuring time and the western julian calendar is but one. so the nonsense about 2012? don't sweat it. the real destruction is happening all around us, as we watch and bear witness to a system of exchange of goods and services that is rotten to the core as it comes crashing down by the force of its own bloated weight.
Happy Happy!

yule-y tidings

I am hoping that all readers are taking advantage of the lovely cold weather and gathering up favorite books and warm drinks to sip by a heat source, whether natural -like a yule log- or a ceramic electric radiator. 'tis the season after all and all that stuff. here's hoping that the solstice fairy or father xmas or el santo nino brings you lovely reading materials and a nice strong cuppa.

be safe and happy feasting

i am wishing all of my thousands of loyal readers a very happy celebration and safe travels. i shall post more tomorrow, right now i am going to try to head to the cine to see a movie, hopefully nothing pixar-ish (can we say OVERKILL?) or cartoony. yup. slim pickings, but i shall try!
peace on earth and good will and all that sort of thing.

Happy festivus!

If you're tired of all the coercive hustle and bustle, i encourage you to celebrate FEstivus with me, where no gifts are exchanged or expected....Festivus where we all gather round the pole and vent! Festivus for those tired of the drone of the sale! sale! sale! ringing in our ears. Festivus, for the rest of this. Tip your cup and drink with me, friends. And if you've not purchased the perfect something for whoever, who cares? Festivus requires no cash, no charge, no gold. Is that not more refreshing than the pure white snow on a winter's eve?

lazy posting day

I am wishing i had as much energy as these little girls do, but since i don't, i will be taking the easy way out and listing my top of the most played/playlist:
"Everlong" -Foo Fighters
"Read my Mind"- Killers
"Main Yahaan Hoon"- Udit Narayan
"A Little Respect" - Erasure
"Anna Molly"-Incubus
"Starlight"-Muse
"Asi Fue"- Juan Gabriel
"Te Solte la Rienda"-Mana
"Rosas"-La Oreja Van Gogh
"Feel the Pain" Dinosaur Jr.
"O Enredo do Carnaval Carioca" Caetano Veloso
"Burbujas de Amor" Juan Luis Guerra
"Haunted" Shane McGowan
"Bad Reputation"-Freedy Johnston
"La Farsante"-Juan Gabriel
"Rain King"-Counting Crows
"Bakhta"-Khaled
"Change your mind" -Killers
"El Rey"- Vicente Fernandez
"Helena" -My Chemical Romance

Well, that's the top twenty anyways, with Everlong coming in at a whopping 155 plays as of this afternoon, 100 for the Killers, and 99 for Udit Narayan's "Main Yahaan Hoon" from the movie 'Veer Zaara'. I'd be interested to find out what your favorites are---??? What will be your music mix while en route to wherever this winter holiday season?

mail art madness

i am thinking that the best thing about mail art is the recycling aspect of it: you make tons of artwork anyhow, it piles up and clutters every empty space in the apt/house, so why not send it on out? the sheer volume alone of artist's proofs, bad color combinations, mess-ups, and experiments gone -oh-so-wrong guarantee that you will never be at a loss by sending the work out there. and the strange thing is that often something that you think is less than decent and bordering on disastrous often falls into the hands of someone who is enthralled by it.... yep, go figure. so today i did a mess of stuff in an effort to free up the color ruts i get into and develop some new color combinations. and...um, well, at first glance they didn't turn out so good. but by the time i finished doing some brush and ink work practice on the less attractive (imho) pieces, and used some crayons on some others, i have to say they didn't come out as bad as at first glance. now if i could stop procrastinating on the scanning ....

post script: if anyone is wondering why the above image is with this post, i was watching this last night when i was working on the mostly oxblood and black experiments, go figure. =)
until tomm dear readers

monday, monday

My newest fav thing is robitussin, nice and thick, with the right amount of alcohol to give you throat that "ahhh!" feeling and not too bad tasting. i've been using it as a chaser for lemon tea with honey or emergen-C since yesterday. since it's monday and i am feeling discombobulated (ha! take that spell check!) i think i am going to name a few random thoughts from off the top of my head:
puerto vallarta- winter sun- bougainvillea (sounds lovely doesn't it?)
tamales! yum! with rice and beans por supuesto i like my dads he puts extra mole inside so that they're never dry
seeing mimi tomm after she gets off work
sending out mail maybemaybemaybe tonight at the self service post in alameda ( cv unit is super slow-won't be doing that again)
ouf! avoiding the holiday traffic that affects everyone trying to get from a to z.. grateful that by this time nxt week it'll be all over
getting my sketchbook for the brooklyn art museum sketchbook project filled and completed in two weeks (ah! nothing beats procrastination!)
painting over acrylic textures with Caran d'Ache watercolor crayons, the experiment i did on saturday came out well, now i shall make a new slew of postcards to go out in january

well, not quite a blog entry but i guess it'll have to do.
until next time (which will most likely be tomm, lol)
greetings from califas and brown winter skies

dropped the ball

Sigh!
i missed yesterday because of a huge stroke of good or bad luck, depending on your outlook.
the good thing? only a mild concussion
the bad thing? taking a huge spill in the slick street into a pool of sodden leaf muck and mud charlie brown style (think lucy pulling the football away from him at just the right moment and pow! on his back) with dogs in tow.
nina and gigi were on their bestest behavior, (good thing) when the neighbor who witnessed the whole thing ran to help me out of the street and on to the sidewalk, the girls sat nicely with no barking, no pulling, and no jumping. they made me proud. they of course, gave me tons of kisses while i was down for the count and looking at the sky, as if to say, 'mama, what are you doing down there?' with their heads cocked to one side and in gigi's case, her little black eyebrows raised in an expression of worried concern.
so here i am today, extremely sore, no huge bruising yet, and able to hobble around and almost turn my head.
until tomorrow dear readers, i'm off to take a shot of robitussin (did i mention i developed a huge case of bronchitis this am? stress-related? cosmic joke? one never knows) before i turn in for the evening.

mail art madness

When i began this blog, it was supposed to be all about the mail art: made, sent, received. somehow it ended up just being about the random events and happenings in my less than exciting day to day existence: pets, weather, cleaning, etc. with some art thrown about---well, at least i post a pic with every entry. But today's entry is going to be a list comprised of the mail art i sent out this week, tuesday to be exact. Roll call fall in....
Betsy in Boston
Hanna in Sweden
Miguel in Seville
Diego y Lupita in SF
Yara -SF
Finn-SF
Sarah-Portland
Alexandre-Sao Paolo
Art Grandma's - East Bay
Tia-Hollister
Amanda-Tejas
j-LA
Cindy-San Leandro
?-?-?

another bunch will be sent out soon
i have a package mailer to be sent out to montevideo but i don't want to have to stand in the line to do a customs form with the holiday madness going on--so that might be sent out after the kapitalist kapers known as xmas are over

will one be sent your way? time will tell, lol. and of course, if you've a request, drop me a line or two in the comment box and i shall post post haste !

cheaters posting the new normal

sorry dearest readers
yet another half-cocked post today....time is zipping by with windshield repairs, extra zesty pups due to stage 3 crispy weather and trying to make it to berkeley in time to break fast this afternoon. so its possible i may return and post, or maybe not. yes, another spine-tingling cliff hanger....will she actually have something to say later? will she be side-tracked by making art? will she get lazy and spend her 40 minutes of free time playing online games?
stay tuned

musings on heredity part II

Yesterday i began to explain the history of our little Nina, the husky mix who we took from a backyard breeder before we'd even heard of them--we had no clue until we started reading about people who bred their dogs for profit--we were naive and thought it a little bizarre that she wanted to keep the little mite (and her fellow all black sibling) separate from the rest of the pack as it were. The mother was indeed gorgeous, a huge lanky husky malamute wolf hybrid mix (we were told) and the rest of the litter were all stereotypical white and silver huskies, except for one all white tiny butterball who was the mini-alpha male. i was told that he pushed all the others away when he wanted to eat and he ate first, as was evident in his size and girth. Our Nina was approximately four pounds, but this guy was double that-so chubby his stomach touched the ground. Talk about a foodie!
Anyway, here are the reasons that we do believe that Nina really might be some kind of wolf hybrid:
She hides her food and digs holes to hide it, if she thinks someone might be watching her, she will keep moving and hiding her stash until she is sure of privacy. She eats the old yucky food despite our best efforts!
She goes to the highest point of the hill and keeps watch over everything.
She howls and yips and doesn't bark, and throws her head back to do so, just like a coyote.
Her gait is more graceful and her neck longer, for instance when she walks she drops her head lower than her shoulders, much like a hunting species would, most notably a wolf, coyote, or even a tiger, and is able to watch and look around while drinking, eating, etc. its very unusual.
She is very high strung and intelligent and always on guard. She can be skittish and she slinks close to the ground as quiet as a ghost.
From far away, her eyes are yellow and glow even in the day, scaring people away. LOL.
Here she is pictured next to a pumpkin plant with her ears thrown back and posing. She is a ham at times.

musings on heredity -the ramblings part one

one of the fun things about having rescue dogs is the eternal loop of theories on their breed backgrounds (see previous post on little gigi the wonderdog, and why we have determined she is malinois rather than a classic german shepherd mix) and our little nina, the naughty husky, is no exception. the only thing we know for sure is that when we agreed to "take her off the hands" of the homeowner where she was at, was that her mother was a huge lanky white and silver tipped husky (along with alluded-to-be wolf hybrid) with seven other littermates. the people told us if we didn't take her away, they would take her and her other black sibling and dump them off at a shelter in modesto county, which were full to the brim with unwanted pets due to the first wave of foreclosures during the summer of 2008. their chances to get out alive were slim, rumors concerning the amount of abandoned pets put down during that season were chilling and stomach-turning 16000 a day, at a low estimate. when my husband saw the little black bear-like four pound bundle rooting around and screeching looking for milk from its mother, his heart melted. he asked if he could pay for the owners to keep her their with the mother for the time it would take for the little mug to be weaned at least at 8 weeks. But the owner refused and repeated that she didn't want the poor little bugger to get "attached" to the other pups or the mom, and that if we didn't take the pup (she offered a two for one deal with the other black pup, which we couldn't do because of our living situation-a 600sq ft apt and no yard-at the time) immediately that day, she was going to drop them off that afternoon at a shelter. nina, or as she was known at that time, nino, (that story to follow-LOL) came over to my husband crying and baying like crazy, and he picked her up and she tried to nurse his ear as he held her like a baby on his shoulder. with her fur bristly and sweet smelling, he took his finger and gave it to her to suckle. he gave the woman the asked for 'adoption fee' which she claimed reimbursed her for the shots and deworming fees ( a bold lie since when we took the poor little mite to the vet to get her formula the vet informed us that shots couldn't take place before eight weeks) incurred, and packed the noisiest little girl into our cat carrier and headed for the house.
part two tomm.

aha! just made it!

well, i tried to post from the lomitas of monterey county but the connection was soooooooooo slow that i decided to wait upon arrival to the semi urban homestead to actually post this picture that i took while in annecy a few years back visiting the in-laws. i love the image of the towed car. i know it doesn't make any sense of connection with the post, but i thought it'd be good for a laugh. more regular type post demain on the charms of country life, lol.

a cheater's post

i leave you with an image of a textured painting i did in the early fall with layers of colors and textures, as a substitution for a lengthy blogpost. i am off to travel to the south and the coastal hillsides to see my dad and his wife. i am leaving my two naughty girls in the care of their dad, which frankly, scares me a bit because who knows what type of mischief the three of them will get into all alone. finger's crossed that the damage won't be too bad.

Three Cheers for the Gigi, the Wonder Dog

So, if you haven't noticed, i've two little dogs, well, not exactly little size-wise, but little in years. the youngest, who is probably turning two in a few weeks (always a little hard to tell with rescues, but according to her lack of estrus when we adopted her means that she was younger than 5 months, so.... insert mathematical formulae here) is a german shepherd mix, most likely a belgian shepherd variety such as a malinois, noting lack of sloping hips and more square body shape and slightly smaller size, by our estimations. Our little girl came to us with the name that the rescuer gave her "GiGi" which we like to tease means "goodie gobbler" because this kid loves to eat and after a terribly rough start in life, has put on 70 lbs during her 18 months with us, although the truth be known, it would be hard pressed to find any animal who wasn't spoiled rotten at our house with my guy, the northafrican doctor doolittle, lol. All of our love and affection has paid off in a big way, bringing Gigi out of her standoffish shell and making her quite the little snuggler, who likes to beg for treats and affection, which she does by a) sitting in an upright position b) pulling her two two front legs up to her chin in a supplicating position c) letting her body weight CRASH to the ground while she squiggles on her back, her huge canine fangs exposed in a kind of scary open mouth smile as she waits for a tummy rub or two.
She also approaches strangers on her daily walks for a head scratch or two while she waits for them to understand what she is asking for as she looks up into their eyes with her glamourous-lined brown eyes swelling with emotion and shining. Yes, she is quite the little lover, licking peoples hands and nudging them with her head and standing by their side, unless you pass by our house, in which case she reverts to her more innate behavior of guard dog and general keeper of safety as she barks furiously in a quite deeply toned bark for a doggie of her size (honestly she sounds as if she's at least 115 or so and twice as big) letting us know of the 'danger' to people and property. Yesterday, her vigilance and bark paid off at 8 am in the morning, when, as happens twice a week, her papi has to go into the cafe to open and start the expresso machine before the sleepy hoards of students come crawling in for their caffeine and pastry fix before trudging the rest of the way to the university, and Gigi heard an unwelcome human guest too close to our gate for her liking. Her furious barking and the volume of it alerted the rest of the dog crew (Nina the naughty husky, who prefers to howl and throw her head back dramatically as if baying at the moon) nearby, scaring the would be prowler or burglar away, and unfortunately for a dog-less neighbor, into her backyard and scaring her near to death.
I'm considering asking my insurance agent if i can get a security discount on the homeowners for our little Gigi, the wonderdog and captain of the homefront patrol. Good job Gigi. You've earned your goodies, my little gobbler.

paper, scissors, and me

i've always loved paper as far back as i can remember. and when i was finally given the right pair of scissors, (not those horrid little left handed scissors they'd try to give me in school for lefties, that don't work worth a crap, tyvm!) i loved to cut things out of newspapers, magazines, and trim things so that all the edges matched up. (here's where the ocd pops up-recutting said image over and over to try and have it perfectly straight to the nteenth degree, harharhar). anyhow, recent events and the literary scramble to write 50k in a few weeks had me a bit tired of typing, so i prescribed meself a date with some of my 'keeper's' - magazines that i have had for a decade now, which i am now ready to get rid of as soon as i've picked through them and cut out the images to save. i've a big stack now which i am trimming and cleaning up so as to file them in categories (animals, floral, texture, text, color, faces-b/w, faces-full color, etc. etc. etc.) if you've never done anything like this, its very mindless and calming and surprisingly refreshing as a nice cup of mineral water, with bubbles and lemon, please.

above is a collage i made into a postcard for a mail art call, using some of the stock of images that i've accumulated.
now i've got to go back to sorting and filing. more tomm!

help! another weather entry!

LOL. i suppose if i do have any readers out there in cyberland they might be a little disappointed to see yet another WEATHER related entry, but with the two dogs it really determines what i do and when i do it. When the rain is coming full force its as if one is on stand-by to run out of the door with the naughty husky Nina (two and a half) and Gigi, the 'hefty' little goodie gobbler who will be turning two in a few weeks, if our calculations are correct, to get them their daily exercise. But Xtica, you may ask, why o why must you inconvenience yourself with walking them in the rain? And i would answer, gentle reader, if i do not, all doggie hell breaks loose in our tiny little 900 sqft WWII cracker box on a hill, with dogs running and spinning and wrestling and play fighting right under my feet, literally.
yes, as all caretakers know, its no fun if mom isn't there to see your shenanigans and be referee to the impromptu doggie duels that take place. so 'tis a far, far better thing to do, braving a few drops of precipitation and trudging up and down the hills to have them burn off a little of the extra 'personality' that makes them so loving and sweet.

Notes on today

Hmm. Clear blue skies, mild and weak blue sun, brillant yellow and red foliage amid the already blossoming tulip and cherry trees in some parts of the neighborhood. One tree has not yet lost all of its leaves and some blossoms are popping out, the temperature has left the trees a wee bit confused as to what season it is exactly. One day its 38 degrees, the next it soars to a tropical 67 degrees, is it any wonder that everyone is sick? Murder on the sinuses.
ANyhooo, cleaned the gutters and culled dead leaves from blooming plants to try to force one more little show of color before the dormant season (which admittedly only lasts 4 weeks here--everything is pretty much in bloom by the first week of February) begins. Had a near miss with a skunk taking a stroll the other night, just as calm as could be, meandering down the sidewalk while nina and gigi were excited to see something interesting and tried to use their combined weight to drag me over to say hi to the little guy. took all of my stubbornness and unwillingness to be sprayed to DRAG them back with all of my weight (it finally pays off, LOL) to cross the street at 7pm at night and continue on our way, leaving the dogs wondering why i was being so unfriendly with the stranger across the road.

day four and still blogging

The title of this altered postcard is one of those quasi-academic numbers : [all you who've ventured to journey to the land of ivory towers know what i'm talking about] complete with colons and two sentences long, ahem, here it is "Let them eat cake: or, you stand on their shoulders". i love the juxtaposition of the late 18th, (perhaps early 19th, but before the Napoleonic Era i'm guessing) elegance and attitude so boldly displayed against the muted almost imperceptible individuals that are captured in image nearly swarming in numbers. my intent was to make the viewer consider the manner in which the colonies obtained those goods and lifestyles that they so ostentatiously enjoyed.

and on a cheery note, its day four and i'm still blogging. and i signed up to do 30k more words (which will bring my novel to a finish i'm hoping) in the next three weeks. then it will be the absolute infierno of editing. now there's the rub, eh?

Web Stickers - Defenders of Wildlife

good morning aztlan!

Sunday mornings listening to rancheras, eating mulletas con canela y butter. Dogs eagerly awaiting dog snacks or crusts of dried french bread and talking to family in various parts of the world via the miracle of the telephone. enjoying clouds and weak brown winter sun while the rest of the world endurs frozen fingers, pipes, and roads or worse in the case of casablanca, where a large majority of the population is up to their knees in flood water. when i walk outside and see blossoming tulip trees, roses in bloom, and flowering jacarandas, i am grateful to be here in the coastal chapparal of califas.

rainy saturday morning challenges

ok
i promise not to use this as a whining board (a lieu de 'sounding board' but with a twist) but this is my experience today:
pulled left side of lumbar yesterday probably as a result of overcompensating for luxating hip on opposite side. now i look like a drunk robot when i walk.
raining today and must take out dogs regardless (husky and german shepherd mixes stubbornly retain their working dogs qualities despite being pets, hence the walks come rain, sleet, snow or hell unfurled. extra challenging with hip and slick sidewalks.
did i mention we live in an old neighborhood that has randomly paved sidewalks and 45% inclines for the most part, oh the charm of the semi-rustic life
the baby of the two dogs (and the largest tipping the scale @ 85+ pounds) is prone to seizures. she had one this morning as we were trying to get out the door and beat the rain. it was pretty long but the worst of it is what the doctors call the 'post-ictal' phase- meaning her return to actual interact life where her brain function is normal and she recognizes who she is and where she is and most importantly, who the hell you are- yep, its heartbreaking to see your otherwise loving pet cower in fright when she can't/doesn't/isn't able to know her surroundings.
in an effort to help calm her and get a grasp on her reality, a long walk is usually the antidote, preferably in an area that she can identify by scent.
but now its raining like mad and i am hobbling and lurching due to back injury like a drunken sailor on roads that are notoriously slippery and uphill and if i never post again its probably because i fell and broke me damn leg and am on a sodden muddy road in the wilds of the fairmount ridge.

A new beginning

So in an attempt to keep up with the writing thing, i have signed up for NaBloPoMo, and hereby promise, (yep, cross my heart hope to die...) to post something every day. so i guess anyone who had stumbled on my blog prior to today will be shocked j/b (just because-a new abbreviation that i hope will sweep the blogosphere LOL) i hadn't posted since feb 2008. so many things have happened since then and perhaps i will go into that later. but for right now i will leave you with this snazzy image that i captured at the exploratorium one day while in grad school of 2006 while i should have been working on revising my thesis.
